About Woodmill and Portable Sawmill Bandsaw Blades

Woodmill, PortaMill and sawmill bandsaw blades are essentially the same type of blade. They are designed for use on band sawmills, whether portable mills or larger stationary sawmills. The terms are often used interchangeably in the industry.

United Products stocks a wide range of portable sawmill bandsaw blades for timber milling, commonly used throughout New Zealand.

Blades are supplied ready to fit common portable mills including Wood-Mizer LT series mills, Norwood LumberMate mills and Woodland Mills HM series sawmills.

Blade Width

Portable sawmill blades are available in various widths, typically ranging from 25 mm (1″) to 50 mm (2″).
Wider blades generally provide improved beam strength and straighter cutting, while narrower blades are commonly used on smaller portable mills.

Portable sawmill blade widths are also commonly referred to using nominal industry sizing. For example, “34 mm” portable mill blades are typically around 32 mm actual width (1 1/4″), while “41 mm” blades are typically around 38 mm actual width (1 1/2″).

Tooth Pitch (TPI)

Woodmill and sawmill blades use very coarse tooth pitches designed for cutting green timber and logs.

Common pitches include:

• 1 TPI
• 1.14 TPI (7/8″ or 22 mm pitch – distance between teeth)
• 1.3 TPI (3/4″ or 19 mm pitch – distance between teeth)

The ideal tooth pitch depends on timber species, log size and cutting conditions.
Portable sawmill tooth pitch terminology varies between manufacturers. For example, “1.1 TPI” blades are commonly the same as 22 mm / 7/8″ pitch blades, often also listed as 1.14 TPI.
